I am compelled by the sensation of seeing things fresh, as if for the first time.

Michael Sherrill

Named a James Renwick Alliance for Craft Master of the Medium in 2019, Michael Sherrill uses clay, glass and metals to construct intricate vessels and sculptures that share his awe of the natural world. Over his career spanning more than four decades, Sherrill has developed his own set of techniques and tools for manipulating his chosen materials, which eventually led to the creation of his own line of specialized clay utensils, Mudtools. One writer described Sherrill’s botanical sculptures as “Sinuous, ethereal, dynamic… like John James Audubon engravings extrapolated into 3D.” In addition to the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum Sherrill’s works are in the permanent collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Art and Design, and the Corning Museum of Glass, among others.

Rago is pleased to present five unique lots sold to benefit the James Renwick Alliance for Craft and their mission and programs to further promote public appreciation and education of American Craft. This exciting collection includes works by American artists Nicole Chesney, Garry Knox Bennett, John Garrett, Marc Maiorana, and Michael Sherrill.

All lots in the James Renwick Alliance for Craft Auction are of the primary market, unless otherwise indicated. They are being sold with all proceeds going to the James Renwick Alliance (JRA) and will be shipped directly from the artist or the gallery. For each of these lots, Rago is waiving the seller’s commission and donating the buyer’s premium in full to the JRA.
