As significant collectors of George Nakashima, Phyllis and Seymour Lifschutz not only commissioned many special works by the furniture maker, but also developed a lasting family friendship built on care and mutual respect. A physician, Seymour Lifschutz began furnishing the apartment above his office with Nakashima pieces starting in the 1950s, and would eventually become the family's regular doctor. In her essay accompanying the Lifschutz Collection of Nakashima featured in Modern Design, Mira Nakashima remembers that, "Unlike many other clients, Phyllis and Seymour respected the artist’s judgement, and because my father liked them, he would often give them choice pieces of wood he refused to sell to other clients."
