Carolee Schneemann
1939–2019
follow artist

Pushing the boundaries of artistic and sexual expression, Carolee Schneemann’s experimental and multidisciplinary practice helped to shape the canon of feminist art. Her work challenged bodily taboos and explored women's roles in art and society. Though she was trained as a painter, she applied the gestural physicality of her painted works to kinetic, sculptural compositions and to provocative, choreographed performances that centered on the body and frequently, her own. Many of these performative works were filmed and edited into cinematic assemblages. Schneemann was awarded a Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 2017 Venice Biennale and in 2018 was the subject of a critically acclaimed retrospective at the Museum der Moderne Salzburg, Carolee Schneemann: Kinetic Painting, which traveled to MoMA PS1. Her oeuvre serves as a lasting influence for makers who transform our understanding of what art can look like and achieve.
