Arthur Boyd was born in Murrumbeena, Victoria, Australia into a family of artists—his grandparents, parents, and siblings all worked in various creative fields—Boyd was steeped in an environment of artistic exploration from a young age. Initially self-taught, he was deeply influenced by the landscape and social realities of his time. During WWII, he served as a cartographer in the army and, though he did not see active service, was affected by the devastation and trauma of war. This experience profoundly impacted his art, which frequently grappled with themes of human suffering and alienation.

Boyd's early works from the 1940s and 50s blended elements of expressionism with a unique, dreamlike lyricism. His paintings often depicted mythical figures and outcasts, motifs that underscored his deep empathy for the marginalized. One of his most famous series, the "Bride" series, delved into the tensions of interracial relationships in Australia.

Throughout his life, Boyd also became an accomplished ceramicist and printmaker, creating works that shared the same rich narrative complexity as his paintings. His practice was defined by a fearless experimentation with materials and forms, reflecting a lifelong curiosity and refusal to be confined by traditional boundaries. In 1959, Boyd moved to London, where he further developed the mythological and biblical themes in his art, often juxtaposing these with contemporary events. His landscapes, in particular, were very much tied to his memories of the Australian bush, evoking both its stark beauty and its harshness.

Boyd represented Australia at the Venice Biennale in 1958 and eventually returned to his home country in 1971. In 1993, a major retrospective of his work was held at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, and in 1999 he was posthumously appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC), one of the nation's highest honors.
