Typus Orbis Universalis (from Cosmographiae Universalis Lib. VI In Quibus Iuxta Certioris Fidel Scriptores...)
copper engraving on paper with hand-coloring 12¼ h × 15¾ w in (31 × 40 cm)
First published in 1544, Cosmographia was one of the most popular 16th century books, with about 40 editions in a century, including translations into Czech, French, Italian, and Latin. This oval projection map was from the Latin edition. Continents are outlined, with a large Northwest passage above the North American continent, which shown with the east coast nearly separated by the Sea of Verrazzano. The mythical islands of Calensuan and Grisonum are shown near the location of Australia. The demand for Cosmographia was largely driven by the wood-engraved maps; the block for this map was cut by David Kandel with his initials in the lower left corner.
