Johann Bongars and Marnio Sanudo. After Pietro Vesconte (fl. 1310-1330). Medieval Portolan Map of the World. Hanover, 1611. Intended to spur a revival of the Crusades, Jerusalem is at the center of the circular map with east up, and with the first accurate conceptions of the Mediterranean and Black Seas. Considered one of the earliest surviving examples of a modern world map drawn in medieval times (c. 1311).
