Five Things to Know About Walter Emerson Baum

Baum was one of the only members of the New Hope Art Colony to have actually been born in Bucks County, Pennsylvania.

To make ends meet early in his career, he worked as a photographer for The Poultry Item, a magazine focused on chickens, ducks and geese.

He worked en plein air, capturing impressionistic landscapes and the quiet charm of Main Street America.

Baum wrote an influential column in the Philadelphia Evening and Sunday Bulletin as the paper’s art critic and reviewer.

He helped establish the Bucks County Traveling Art Gallery to bring art to school children across the county. The collection now has over 350 works of art.
