David Ferreira b. 1982
David Ferreira is best known for his mixed-media drawings and sculptures. Appropriated images from coloring books and animation, 18th-century newspaper etchings, and political cartoons from the 1900s coalesce into a study on identity formation – an investigation of race, nationality, sexuality, and gender where the familiar cartoon characters are deconstructed and reinterpreted to become temporal beings and transmitters of imagined histories. These beings, and the space they inhabit, furnish an in-between reality – a reality that signals how the body both bears and transforms historical memory.
Ferreira received his BFA from The Cooper Union and has since exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the United States and abroad, including the Center of Contemporary Art, Seattle, Nemeth Art Center, Park Rapids, MN, Brattleboro Museum & Art Center, Brattleboro, VT, and Kunstraum Richard Sorge Gallery, Berlin. He has held residencies at various New York City institutions such as the Lower East Side Printshop, the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts, and The Center for Book Arts and today divides his time between New Jersey and New York City.
