Cheyney Thompson centers his artistic practice on the production, distribution, and exhibition of painting. His projects often take years to complete and, while he works predominantly as a painter, Thompson also makes use of the print medium. Sets of Color from Robho to Storage is a series of twenty-five offset lithographs based on five photographs of the storage tills at Andrew Kreps Gallery in Manhattan (the artist’s representing gallery). The resulting images, printed in subtle monochromes of red, purple, blue, green, and black, capture the non stop movement of artworks within a commercial space and can be viewed in a multitude of ways, described by art critic Frances Richard as “(a) a double entendre on “representation” as both the function of images in relation to the world and the function of galleries in relation to the artist. Or (b) a send-up of/homage to strategies of haut Conceptualism and institutional critique. Or (c) a sensitive essay in traditional art problems like the relation between hue and value, variations on the grayscale, and the flat grid compared to the perspectival orthogonal. Or (d) all of the above.”
