Based in her childhood hometown in the rural outskirts of Taichung, Taiwan, Suling Wang is recognized worldwide for her large-scale abstractions influenced by Taiwanese oral tradition, Chinese landscape painting, and currents of European and American abstract art. Densely layered and evoking multiple planes of motion, Wang's paintings employ “an expansive vocabulary of gestural marks and layers,” according to Victoria Miro gallery. Her works are held in the permanent collections of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, among others.
In my work, there is a central idea which is to take apart my personal world and then reassembling it, transforming it into blocks. These elemental pieces reflect a certain concept. And these concepts present a multitude of changes according to varying temporal and spatial conditions; these changes present an interweaving of certainty and uncertainty. This is followed by dissembling, division, and then a further integration.
