In 1999, the Board of Directors of the Municipal Art Society of Baltimore City initiated planning for a world-class sculpture to be donated to the City of Baltimore in commemoration of the organization’s 100th anniversary. Alongside the New York Public Arts Fund and recognized art figures from the region, the Society chose Jonathan Borofsky to receive the commission for a work of art that reflected Baltimore’s sense of community while also depicting a spirit of celebration. 

The resulting installation, Male/Female, is a 14-ton, 52-foot tall aluminum sculpture that stands on the plaza in front of Pennsylvania Station as a gateway to the City of Baltimore. Depicting the silhouettes of two 50-foot tall realistic figures, one male and one female, that intersect at the center to become one spiritual form, the sculpture represents the continuing search for balance and unity in trying cultural times. At the intersection of the two figures’ “heart areas”, Borofsky placed an LED that produces a glowing light, which emanates from the sculpture during hours of darkness.
