AQUI Editions was founded in 1983 by Cliff Baldwin, Julie Bradrick, and Davi Det Hompson with a core mission of creating democratic art. As Baldwin stated, “The prints we made were designed for everyone to view, wherever, whenever they wanted”. Collaborating with silk-screener Norman Lassiter, AQUI published ten issues throughout the 1980s, each with an oversized poster featuring original artwork by Barbara Kruger, Gilbert & George, Les Levin, and Steve Gianakos among others. The prints came in one of two sizes: 45 h x 69 w inches or 35 h x 45 w inches and were priced at $10, providing high-quality, low-cost art for the public. The works sold at locations such as MoMA bookstore and Printed Matter but could also be seen lining the streets of New York, grabbing the attention of passersby with their bold, graphic designs. AQUI remains as significant today as it was in the 1980s for its promotion of accessible art and its innovative printmaking explorations.
