A flamboyant and trailblazing American artist, LeRoy Neiman's vivid Expressionist style captured the dynamism of sports, entertainment, and modern leisure culture. Born in Saint Paul, Minnesota in 1921 as LeRoy Leslie Runquist, Neiman adopted the surname of his stepfather after his father left the family. Neiman's creative flair emerged early: as a boy, he sold illustrated posters to local merchants and tattooed his classmates with ink drawings. His time in the U.S. Army during World War II not only introduced him to mural work in mess halls but also provided the platform to hone his artistic vocabulary. After the war, he utilized the G.I. Bill to study at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he later taught and began exhibiting award-winning paintings.

Neiman's career took a pivotal turn in 1954 when he met Hugh Hefner, who commissioned him for Playboy magazine. This marked the beginning of a lifelong collaboration, including the creation of the iconic "Femlin" character and the long-running "Man at His Leisure" feature. Through Playboy, Neiman's work gained wide exposure and a global stage, allowing him to travel extensively and document elite social scenes, cultural hotspots, and international sporting events. From Monaco to the French Riviera, from Deauville to Venice, Neiman painted with an exuberant palette and energetic line, channeling the pulse of modern life into his work.

Best known for his sports imagery, Neiman pioneered the field of athletic art with a uniquely theatrical, colorful style. He was the official artist for five Olympic Games and painted high-profile events such as the Super Bowl, World Series, and championship boxing matches. He became a cultural icon, befriending sports legends like Muhammad Ali and appearing in films like Rocky III. With his signature handlebar mustache and ever-present cigar, Neiman was a fixture of televised sports and popular media. His work, although often dismissed by critics, brought fine art into the mainstream and to mass audiences, helping to democratize access to artistic representation.

Beyond his artistic output, Neiman was a dedicated philanthropist. He and his wife, Janet Byrne, established the LeRoy Neiman Foundation to fund arts education and create spaces for underserved youth to explore creativity. His donations supported centers at Columbia University, UCLA, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Even after losing a leg late in life, Neiman continued to paint and published his autobiography shortly before his death in 2012. His legacy endures not only through his electrifying depictions of modern life but also via the educational institutions and community programs he championed.
