Woodson Rainey designed the present work in response to an invitation from Progressive Architecture Magazine to conceive a piece of "Conceptual Furniture", hence the play on the name "floor lamp". A floor lamp is usually a standing fixture, but this one quite literally rolls around on the floor. Rainey is a noted architect who has taught at Columbia University and the University of Utah and now teaches at Pratt Institute. He has worked with I.M. Pei, Richard Meier, SOM, and is the recipient of numerous accolades, including five IALD lighting design awards.
