Something Old, Something New

The rays as they appeared in situ above Philip Lloyd Powell's bed

The present work—one of only two made—is master metalworker, welder, and craftsman Dorsey Reading’s first non-Paul Evans designed piece, and his first ever offered at auction. Made in 2020, he created the central element and surrounded it with gilt wood rays from the home of Philip Lloyd Powell which he acquired from Rago in 2010. Reading was a long-time friend of Powell’s and recalls seeing them in situ when visiting the designer’s home. They originally adorned a circular window above Powell’s bed and, as Reading explains, Powell installed them so that when laying in bed during the day it would be like looking at the sun, and at night at the moon.
