Michigan artist John Woodward uses his own likeness to explore the intersection of painting and sculpture, and how viewers experience three-dimensional space. Similar to Piero Fornasetti’s endless exploration of Italian opera singer Lina Cavalieri’s face in his Tema e Variazioni series or René Magritte’s witty juxtaposition of images and words, Woodward punctures, embellishes, and sculpts his visage into a multitude of portraits that encourage us to consider how we see not only art, but the world and our place in it.
