provenance: The Artist | Allan Stone Gallery, New York
Founded in 1960 by art dealer Allan Stone (1932–2006), the New York gallery known today as Allan Stone Projects has been admired for over half a century. Celebrated for its eclectic approach and early advocacy of pivotal artists of the 20th century, Allan Stone Gallery was a leading authority on Abstract Expressionism, the New York dealer for Wayne Thiebaud for over forty years, and showed the works of Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, Arshile Gorky, Joseph Cornell, John Graham and John Chamberlain. Stone also promoted the work of a younger generation of artists that were in conversation with other artists in his collection, working in the mediums of assemblage, collage and new modes of abstraction. In addition to modern masterworks and contemporary art, Allan Stone also collected and exhibited international folk art, Americana and important decorative arts and industrial design.
Richard Haden b. 1958
A suspension of disbelief is at the center of Richard Haden’s artistic practice. Combining ihs expert talents in carving and trompe l’oeil, he carves and paints wood into facsimiles of mass-produced objects. Haden collects found objects (selected for their unique imperfections) as inspiration; cans, car parts, suitcases, cardboard boxes and buckets are shown as dented, rusted, oxidized, and misshapen relics. Channeling the Duchampian readymade, Haden defiles mass-production with old world craftsmanship and precision; each object is elevated to greatness through meticulous reproduction .
Richard Haden was born in Frankfort, Kentucky, in 1958 and attended the University of Kentucky at Lexington, from 1977 to 1980. Haden has had solo shows at the Anhalt Gallery in Los Angeles, the Dorscht Gallery in Miami, Allan Stone Gallery in New York, and the University of Maine Museum of Art, in Bangor. Haden’s works are in several noted public collections including the Di Rosa Preserve, in Napa, California and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Miami. Haden continues to create work from both Miami and San Francisco.
