ALI TAYAR (b. 1959) Pair of chairs from Pop Pub, New York, 2011; Oak, leather; Unmarked; 32" x 23 1/2" x 28"; Mark McDonald was one of the early champions of the Turkish-American architect Ali Tayar (1959-2016), whose furniture and industrial design was recently the subject of a retrospective at R & Company, New York. Tayar designed the interior and famed perforated-aluminum security gate of Mark’s Gansevoort Gallery in 1995-96, which is a landmark facade in the Meatpacking District. The present pair of chairs is one of Tayar’s last furniture designs, and is the first appearance of the model on the market. Tayar designed several interiors for the Pop Burger restaurant chain in New York, including Pop Pub on University Place.
