Dean Howell b. 1941
Educated in both art and psychology, Howell brings the tradition of nineteenth century American and European figurative sculpture and drawing into the contemporary world. His portraits are an achievement of both vision and craft through their expressiveness and scale. Many of Howell's works recall Roman busts of emperors and other heroes, as well as earlier Greek sculptures of youthful athletes.
Dean Howell was born in Dayton, Ohio in 1941. He earned a doctorate in sculpture, psychology and art education in 1972 and lived and worked in New York throughout the 1980s. Along with fine art, Howell also wrote and produced plays and independent films during his time in New York. In 1992 he relocated to Santa Fe, where he currently lives, works, teaches and continues to publish academic papers on the importance of arts education. His work has been exhibited in galleries in New York and Santa Fe as well as the Albuquerque Museum and the New Mexico Museum of Fine Arts, Santa Fe.
