"My current body of work looks at gun violence…. The teapot--an iconic object within the decorative arts--implies a convening and a coming together. It also has aristocratic associations. Throughout history, teapots would be commissioned to bear the portrait of the wealthy patrons. They operated as a symbol of status in high society. The portraits I chose for these works are mugshots of Civil Rights leaders, and other cultural figures representative of Black and Latino culture.” —Robert Lugo
