In Remembrance of Gary Keith
by David Rago

I met Gary nearly forty years ago when I first exhibited at the Los Angeles Pottery Show in Glendale, CA. He was what I called a "dealer's dealer": soft-spoken, generous with information, very knowledgeable, and always fair and reliable. We developed an immediate friendship which ended only with his sudden and untimely death in December of 2021.
I knew him as an artist first, with ceramics and decorative art as a sideline. I found out later that he had both a Master's and Bachelor's of fine art, which went a long way to explain how deep and varied his eye was for the pottery in which we both specialized. He was a Renaissance man, with artistic skills ranging from drawing, animation, painting, collage, and sculpture. But, more than anything, Gary was a trusted confidant and associate.
We are honored in having been entrusted with his life collection, which appears in this auction in the form of 20th Century decorative ceramics. His Arts and Crafts furniture and metalwork will be sold in a sale later this fall, and his fine art will be included in auctions in New Jersey, Chicago, and Los Angeles.
