The Visionary Eye of Allan Stone
Founded in 1960 by art dealer Allan Stone (1932–2006), the New York gallery known today as Allan Stone Projects has been admired for over half a century. Celebrated for its eclectic approach and early advocacy of pivotal artists of the 20th century, Allan Stone Gallery was a leading authority on Abstract Expressionism, the New York dealer for Wayne Thiebaud for over forty years, and showed the works of Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, Arshile Gorky, Joseph Cornell, John Graham and John Chamberlain. Stone also promoted the work of a younger generation of artists that were in conversation with other artists in his collection, working in the mediums of assemblage, collage and new modes of abstraction. In addition to modern masterworks and contemporary art, Allan Stone also collected and exhibited international folk art, Americana and important decorative arts and industrial design.
Working in a style that links mystery, irony, and realism, Derrick Guild channels the Dutch Rococo and seventeenth century Spanish painting in contemporary depictions of everyday objects. By heightening the quotidian and familiar to new levels of poignancy and perplexity, Guild imbues objects with an uneasiness that defies conventions.
Derrick Guild was born in Perth, Scotland in 1963. From 1983 to1987, he attended Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, in Dundee, Scotland. Guild briefly taught at the Art Institute of Chicago, and was a visiting lecturer at the Glasgow School of Art. He has received numerous awards and accolades, including Diadem Architects Centenary Award in 1984, the Royal Scottish Academy Sir William Gillies Bequest Award in 2004, a Carnegie Trust Award in 2005, and was inducted into the Royal Scottish Academy in 2010. Guild has had solo exhibitions at Paton Gallery, London, The Scottish Gallery, Edinburgh, and Allan Stone Gallery, New York. Guild lives and works in Edinburgh.
