Arguably one of the most famous post-war English ceramicists, German-born Hans Coper was mentored by fellow potter Lucie Rie. Along with Rie, Coper helped to revolutionize British studio ceramics which, until the 1950s, had been dominated primarily by more traditional forms and techniques. Unlike his mentor, he worked exclusively in stoneware and eschewed color, opting for a monochromatic palette of white, buff, black, and brown which – when combined with different textures and layered glazes – suffuses his unique yet simple forms with a striking monumentality.
