ALBERT PALEY (b. 1944) Bud vase, Rochester, NY, 1968; Seamed and raised sterling silver, Ceylon moonstone; Stamped PALEY STERLING; 11 1/2" x 2 1/2"; Provenance: Collection of the artist; Published: Lucie-Smith, The Art of Albert Paley, 1996, no. 68; Paley was trained early in his career in the disciplines of goldsmithing and silversmithing. He only created six vessel shapes utilizing these disciplines: a chalice commissioned for Pope Paul for the 41st Eucharistic Congress in Philadelphia, another chalice currently held in the Delaware Art Museum, a teapot that won a national award from the Silversmiths Guild, a small drinking cup, a container, and this silver bud vase. The sensual quality of the forged lines in the context of organic form is indicative in PaleyÕs work and can be seen here further accented by the Ceylon moonstone.
