Condition Report

Swords: heavy corrosion to metal throughout. Some gilt still present on brass guard to one, otherwise handsome patina to both. Leather grip intact, but wire wrap is loose to one. Scabbards: in poor condition. Leather is dry, cracked and disintegrating. One scabbard is broken into three pieces. Each engraved with the names of their owners and with each battle they fought in: 1).Inscribed to scabbard: Lt. H. C. Mason from his classmates Dec. 5th 1861 - Yorktown, West Point, Fair Oaks, Savage Station, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and Rappahannock. 2). Inscribed to scabbard: Lt. P. D. Mason from his friends Oct. 22nd 1861 - 1st Lt. in Battery H. S. J. of 2nd Brigadeof Horse Batteries of H. L. Artillery. Died July 18th of wounds sustained June 11th 1864 at Trevilian Station under Sheridan after having been engaged in the Battles of Williamsburg, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville & Gettysburg.
