Condition Report

Painting appears to be lined, but was not removed from the frame. The original canvas appears to be lifting slightly from lining, which is most evident in top and bottom edges of composition. The lining and any previous restoration is very old and does not fluoresce under a blacklight. There appear to be some areas that have been touched up with paint many years ago. There is paint loss in areas particularly along the edges, in lower left corner, Ceres’s arm and crown of wheat and upper right corner. Some minor craquelure throughout. Blooming evident in dark areas of the background particularly in lower left corner and upper portion of painting. Extraneous green pigment on drapery of Venus’s right arm and in a few other areas on paint surface. There is a horizontal line of extraneous pigment along the top portion of Venus’s head. A few dimples to canvas evident in raking light. Buckling to canvas evident along the edges.

This work of art has been examined by Simon Parkes.
