| 271 | WENDELL CASTLE Room-size installation, "Library Walls," with bookshelf/wall unit in satinwood, leather, gesso and acrylic, 1988. (From the Estate of Peter Joseph, New York.) 62" x 217" x 108" One of Wendell Castle's most important private comissions, Library Walls was created for noted gallery owner Peter T. Joseph. Known for representing studio furniture masters, Joseph became one of Castle's most enthuiastic patrons, comissioning some of his most experimental and important work. Library Walls is an enviornment of syncopated chaos. Playing on ideas of deconstructivismm and Castle's characteristic love of suprise, the library's form appears to fight with its function. The space is defined by aggressively slanted sheleves and low relief circles, broken apart by angles. There are hidden doors throughout which, once opened, reveal a shockingly traditional, luxuriously appointed library setting. | 9,000 - 14,000 |
