sectional construction. Each lobed base has six panels with Karashishi
and peonies. Above them tortoises crawl on rocks amongst cresting
waves; writhing dragons in high relief, one ascending and one
descending coil around the middle of each column. Capping the columns
are six more panels with animated kirin figures. The lantern cages have
six open work panels, one fitted as a door with a double gourd lock,
each panel is decorated with bird and prunus. Centered on each panel, a
mon of the Tokugama family crest. The large hexagonal cupolas have six
slithering dragons, coiled upward and outward. Each dragon holds a bell
suspended from a vajra style chain. The bells are adorned with
scrolling tendrils. Each lanter is capped with a large pointed jewel
