HARVEY ELLIS Mixed media drawing on paper of four men working in a
foundry, c. 1903, framed. Unmarked. Sight: 19" x 12 3/4" Provenance:
From the Fayetteville, New York, estate of Mrs. Leopold Stickley, 1982,
this drawing once hung in the restaurant on the twelfth floor of Gustav
Stickley's Craftsman Building in New York City (photographed in situ).
Better known for his architectural and furniture designs, Ellis also
produced works on paper, which show the influence of Japanese prints
and European painting trends at the turn of the century. [PARAGRAPH] In
Ellis' obituary in 1904, Gustav Stickley wrote: "Mr. Ellis was a man of
unusual gifts; possessing an accurate and exquisite sense of color, a
great facility in design and a sound judgment of effect. These
qualities were evidenced in his slightest sketches, causing them to be
kept as treasures by those fortunate enough to acquire them." (ONLINE
