The Tete du Femme lamp has an intriguing history of collaboration
across international borders. Jean-Michel Frank commissioned the original
design from the sculptor and craftsmen brothers, Alberto and Diego
Giacometti in Paris, 1929. Susse Freres produced the castings for the
first lamps in Paris. Before the Nazi occupation of Paris in 1939, Frank
fled to Buenos Aires. His Argentine friend, Ignacio Pirovano, provided
refuge and work. Pirovano, together with his brother and two other
architects, formed the leading interior design firm, Comte Ltda, producing
new products for the emerging modernist market in Argentina. Between 1939
and 1942 (the year of his untimely death), Frank re-created the Parisian
designs, including Tete du Femme, along with new designs. The Comte Ltda
lamps were produced between 1940 and 1960, when the factory closed its

Harry Bertoia's monoprints were the medium he used throughout his
life, beginning with the early years at Cranbrook Academy of Art where he
was teaching metalwork. As Bertoia's reputation as a designer grew, his
use of the monoprint became a medium of experimentation. The images evolve
along with his investigation of forms, at times resembling the designs
that would be seen in the furniture he was creating for Knoll in the early
1950s. They are the companion images to sculptural commissions throughout
his career. Others stand alone, as fascinating abstracts and unique
visions. The monoprints were exhibited, on a limited basis, at the
Staempfli Gallery in New York, but most remained as part of his own
personal collection. Exceptional HARRY BERTOIA monoprint, 1940s, colored
inks on rice paper, depicting a complex arrangement of geometric and
biomorphic forms floating in negative and positive space on a
softly-textured ground. (One of the finest examples of Bertoia's
monoprints, both in terms of size and composition. Accompanied by a copy
of the catalog, "Harry Bertoia, Printmaker: Monotypes and Other
Monographics", in which a similar example is illustrated on page 83, pl.
