66 The following eleven lots were created by the collaboration of Rolland and Lucille Lietzke, one of American pottery's noteworthy couples. In the 1940s and 50s, the Lietzkes produced porcelain in their Ohio studio. After extensive travel in the early 1960s which took them to India and Peru, they created more primitive, one-of-a-kind slab pieces in stoneware reflecting their renewed interest in ancient non-western forms. Lucille, who went by the name of Luke, also created unique jewelry forms. Five LIETZKE porcelain stoppered bottles: two in white, two in teal, and one in orange-brown. One missing stopper. 273 Historically-important ISAMU NOGUCHI drawings chronicling the evolution of the Rocking Stool. This lot includes a photocopied letter dated Oct. 29, 1955, introducing Knoll to a drawing of the wood turning top and bottom of the Rocking Stool and bears the photocopied signature, "Isamu". Also included are three pages of free-hand pencil drawings by Noguchi illustrating the various developmental stages of the Rocking Stool, including a detail of a metal doughnut base, several competing support ideas, engineering details and a personal note asking, "Claire, where is Bertoia?". One page has "Noguchi" written across the top. Additionally, there is a large blueprint detailing mechanical specifics of the Rocking Stool. Written in the lower left is a note to Charles Niedringhaus (sp?), stating: "Dear Charles/Here is my idea of how a really cheap rocking stool can be made using present wire welded support. I suggest metal stamping which, if made in quantity, can become extremely cheap. Please get this properly drawn up--and show it to Shov--if you can locate him/My address next Monday is Wohn De Dart, Talstasse, Zurich". Dated and signed in the lower right, "Noguchi Rocking Stool/1/16/56".
