Historically-important ISAMU NOGUCHI drawings chronicling the
evolution of the Rocking Stool. This lot includes a photocopied letter
dated Oct. 29, 1955, introducing Knoll to a drawing of the wood turning
top and bottom of the Rocking Stool and bears the photocopied signature,
"Isamu". Also included are three pages of free-hand pencil drawings by
Noguchi illustrating the various developmental stages of the Rocking
Stool, including a detail of a metal doughnut base, several competing
support ideas, engineering details and a personal note asking, "Claire,
where is Bertoia?". One page has "Noguchi" written across the top.
Additionally, there is a large blueprint detailing mechanical specifics of
the Rocking Stool. Written in the lower left is a note to Charles
Niedringhaus (sp?), stating: "Dear Charles/Here is my idea of how a really
cheap rocking stool can be made using present wire welded support. I
suggest metal stamping which, if made in quantity, can become extremely
cheap. Please get this properly drawn up--and show it to Shov--if you can
locate him/My address next Monday is Wohn De Dart, Talstasse, Zurich".
Dated and signed in the lower right, "Noguchi Rocking Stool/1/16/56". And
finally, a Knoll furniture development drawing detailing the Rocking
Stools and the Children's Tables with dimensions and identification
numbers, stamped signature from Knoll Associates Incorporated, 575 Madison
Avenue, New York 22 NY, and dated 1/19/56. |
