Must-See Summer Exhibitions for Aesthetes

26 June 2017

The long, lazy days of summer provide the perfect opportunity to explore the hallowed (and typically air conditioned) halls of our favorite museums. Rago’s team of specialists have selected the following ‘must see’ exhibits to visit this summer, both locally and afar.

Frank Lloyd Wright at 150: Unpacking the Archive

Coinciding with the 150th anniversary of the birth of Frank Lloyd Wright, one of the greatest modern American architect of the 20th century, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) has opened the comprehensive exhibit “Frank Lloyd Wright at 150: Unpacking the Archive." With a plethora of works, including some never before seen in public, the exhibit explores Wright’s desire to find a balance between urbanism and nature. Open through October 1.

A similar exhibit, “Frank Lloyd Wright: Buildings for the Prairie" will be on display at the Milwaukee Art Museum (MAM), in the artist’s home state of Wisconsin. Open July 28 – October 15.

Original

A new exhibit “Original" has just opened at the Stickley Museum at Craftsman Farms in Morris Plains, NJ - the only home Gustav Stickley designed and built for his own use. Explore the original interior of the Log House, an icon of the American Arts and Crafts movement fitted with Stickley’s signature furnishings and aesthetic. Open through December 31.

CHIHULY

American glass sculptor and entrepreneur Dale Chihuly is famous for producing blown glass creations of larger-than life proportions. Dazzling examples of these sculptures are currently on display in “CHIHULY" at the New York Botanical Gardens, where the backdrop of the gardens act as a living canvas for 20 must-see installations. Open through October 29.

Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable

Damien Hirst, preeminent contemporary artist and darling/dementor of the modern UK art scene, is at it again this year with his first solo exhibition in Italy in ten years. Considered his most ambitious and complex project to date, Hirst’s “Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable" tells the story of a fictitious ancient ship wreck and the treasures lost (and now found) therein. While this latest project is certainly not without its detractors, "Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable" is Hirst like you’ve never seen. Open through December 3.
