What to Wear: Layered Necklaces

What to Wear: Layered Necklaces

Katherine Van Dell’s Trending Jewelry Tips

18 August 2016

What to wear, what to wear…
Is there any question more vexing for the fashion forward and adornment oriented? In a world of constantly shifting trends, it can be hard to stay stylish without breaking the bank - but that shouldn’t stop you from trying!
Jewelry Specialist Katherine Van Dell has hand-picked a few of her favorite pieces from our upcoming Unreserved Jewelry Auction on August 25th.

Trend #1: Layered Jewelry

Jewelry Specialist, Katherine Van Dell

While I am a girl that mostly follows the mantras of classic dress and accessorizing, there are trends that beckon to us all with alluring appeal. Incorporating these trends with ease into a modern and eclectic wardrobe is the key to making them your own and to wearing them with maximum effect. One such (ongoing) trend is known as Layering; collecting a smattering of delicate, feminine necklaces, often in yellow or rose gold, that layer together comfortably and play with other similar aesthetics. Like the charm laden bracelets of the mid- 20th century - whether these necklaces dangled initials, be-jeweled travel mementos or glittering baubles old and new - the options for personal sentiment and playful self-expression are endless. Personally, I love a thoughtful intermingling of antique and modern pieces that cascade down the neck and provide the eye with multiple focal points.

Lot 4: BELLE EPOQUE MIXED METAL & MOONSTONE ROPE
This late 19th century long chain (60”) of fancy sliver links and oval moonstone cabochons in yellow gold spectacle settings is quite the beauty and incredibly versatile. Depending on you neckline, wrap it once, twice or three times around your neck to add to your layers - or wear it long and free flowing with a Bohemian style silk blouse of shift dress. Moonstones, a symbol of the woman, provide the perfect opportunity to make a definite, albeit subtle, nod to one’s feminine power and mystique.

Lot 98: YELLOW GOLD WATCH CHAIN & LOCKET FOB, INCL. TIFFANY & CO
This circa 1930 watch fob and chain, though originally intended for a gentleman, is long enough to be worn around the neck as a more substantial element of one’s layering. The Tiffany & Co. photobook locket fob can store multiple photos of loved ones, and as a signed piece of jewelry, you can’t go wrong. Double up and wear it in unison with other fobs or sport the chain alone.

Lot 140: DINH VAN, CARTIER YELLOW GOLD NECKLACE
This vintage 1970’s gold chain by famed Parisian jeweler Dinh Van for Cartier is incredibly easy to wear. Dinh Van’s iconic “handcuffs” design came to symbolize the spirit of the 70’s and the notions of love, harmony and friendship. In his designs for Cartier, Dinh Van played with a similar aesthetic, making for highly attractive jewelry with strong geometry, thoughtful design and the coveted Cartier stamp of approval.

Lot 353: DIAMOND & WHITE GOLD NECKLACE
Adding a little sparkle to your mix is a cinch with this .75ct round brilliant cut diamond in a modern white gold bezel setting. The diamond joins to a comfortable rolo link chain, making it easy to wear 24/7. Find a mixed metal piece to incorporate whites and yellows or sport this necklace with silver or platinum. An investment piece and a singularly beautiful gift - this necklace is both timeless and right on trend.
