GIO PONTI (1891 - 1979); SINGER & SONS

Cabinet (no. 2129), Italy, ca. 1950; Italian walnut; Unmarked; 36 1/2" x 47" x 19 1/2"; Provenance: Private collection, Pennsylvania Over the past ten years Rago has sold a number of Ponti for Signer dressers and cabinets. Some were signed, some were not. What has been consistent and reassuring is the narrative of ownership and remarkable consistent high level of quality-construction in Singer pieces. The walnut veneer here (a signature tiger like pattern) and the overall construction are absolutely consistent with our experience. Please see condition report for more information.

Sale Price: $25,000

Estimate: $8,000 - $10,000

Condition Report

Refinished, legs replaced to original specifications. Drawers work well with clean interiors. Very good to excellent overall condition.
A local and trusted Mid Century Modern enthusiast found the dresser in a local Tag Sale in poor condition. The legs had been cut down, and it had a disintegrating dark overcoat to the original finish.
The cut-down legs were removed and working from known dimensions & images we have in our period correct Singer catalog, our local restorer fabricated and properly installed new legs. The non-original darker finish was stripped and a new stain sheen & burnished finish was applied. There are a handful of small and hard to see veneer repairs. Please note that the current estimation considers the described repairs. Had the dresser been signed and in pristine Estate Condition the estimation would be considerably higher.
