MADGE GILL (British, 1884-1961)

Two: Untitled (Women in Hats), pen and ink on twelve mounted cards in frame, and Untitled (Two Women), pen and ink on fabric; Women in Hats : 24" x 18" (framed), Two Women: 8 1/2" x 12" (image); Madge Gill, born Maude Ethel Eades, was an illegitimate child and spent much of her early life in seclusion. At the age of nine she was placed in an orphanage; she moved in with her aunt, who introduced her to spiritualism, at the age of nineteen. In 1919, a married woman and mother, she began to create art guided by a spirit she called Myrninerest. She often worked on paper or rolled calico, unrolling only a section at a time and not viewing the composition in its entirety. Patterns and designs cover the surface of her obsessive drawings, often worked on rolled paper. Gill rarely exhibited her work and never sold any of it for fear of angering Myrninerest.
