PURVIS YOUNG (American, 1943-2010)
"Angels", 1990; Mixed media on board; 53" x 21"; Provenance: Purchased from the artist; In the award winning, feature-length documentary, "Miami", the actress and collector Jane Fonda describes her reaction to Purvis Youngуs art in these words: "All I knew was that thereуs something really powerful and profound going on here. But the first thing that struck me was the hopefulness of the work." In 2006, when the movie was released, the artist was in failing health and hopefulness was in short supply, but he painted prolifically until his death in 2010. "Everyday," Purvis Young would say, "I prays to be greatи." Youngуs greatness is increasingly acknowledged by a once skeptical art world. In November 2006, he was the subject of a major retrospective at the Boca Raton Museum in Florida. In January 2007, the Art Miami art fair named him its Directorуs Choice artist and placed a monumental archway of his work at the entrance to the fair. Articles in prominent art publications and solo exhibitions followed, including recent shows at the Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami and the Rubell Collectionуs Thirty Americans show in Miami in 2015.
