"Ten Nights in a Bar-room", four color lithograph pasted to board in frame, Donaldson Litho Co., USA, ca. 1800s/early 1900s; 77" x 38"; "Ten Nights in a Bar-room and What I Saw There," an 1854 novel, was the second most popular book of the Victorian Era, exceeded only by "Uncle Tomуs Cabin." It is the story of a man swindled out of his business. He turns to drink. His daughter dies when hit by a glass during a bar brawl. He is reborn and runs for mayor. The book, the first work to openly call for the prohibition of liquor, became a popular theatrical melodrama, a Hollywood movie in 1926 and then again in 1931. Neither Rago nor outside poster experts consulted have ever seen this image and research to date has yielded no results.
