FELIPE ARCHULETA MOTHER AND BABY PIG

In carved and painted wood with rope tail and ear bristles; Mother signed and dated 5-3-78 F.B.A.., 22" x 42" x 13", Baby signed and dated 2-14-1979 F.B.A.; 11" x 19" x 10"; Provenance: Purchased from the artist; Felipe Benito Archuleta, one of the best known and most sought after self-taught carvers, set the standard for the "Santa Fe" style. He left the remarkable legacy of a huge and varied menagerie of animals from palm-size to life-size. Working from drawings made on scraps of paper, Archuleta used a chain saw to carve his animalsу shapes in cottonwood, finishing with hand tools, then painting with latex house paint, adding wire, nails, bristles or rope for details. He received the New Mexico Governorуs Award for Excellence and Achievement in 1979 and, in addition to being in numerous museum and private collections, his work is a major component of the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
