Sale Price: $36,250
Estimate: $6,000 - $8,000
Signed in pencil lower left recto. Initialed and dated in plate "l-28 MCE" lower right recto. Sheet is irregular (overall 27 x 18 inches approx) and affixed to backing board via a piece of tape along top edge. This tape is old and has become somewhat brittle. There is a pencil notation at lower right corner: "8451 A". Some extraneous ink in the upper right margin. Margins of sheet have some crinkles and creases. These do not interfere with the image. The sheet is slightly rippled along the upper edge; likely as a result of the tape. Very faint toning (barely visible). There are some areas of the print that seem less richly inked than others. Framed with non-archival materials. This is a result of the original process. Impression is crisp. Additional note: The M.C. Escher Foundation notes that this print was created in a small edition of unknown size. The print was never numbered, but was pencil signed. It was created by the artist in January of 1928. The print is exceptionally rare. It appears in M.C. Escher: His Life and Complete Graphic Work, by Bool, Kist, Weirda and Locher.
